A Year In Books

According to Goodreads, I read 120 unique books in 2011. Really, the number is actually probably slightly higher than that, as I definitely reread some of the books I’d read early on in the year, and I only started using goodreads in early march, so anything before then didn’t get recorded. Though some of them were multiple volumes “graphic novels,” so maybe it all evens out.

Anyways, I think 120 is a pretty decent number! Back in March I guessed that I’d end up reading 150 books, which was a bit of a reach. With how busy I’ve been with work, and moving, and sewing etc, I’m proud of a solid 120 books.

Some entertaining stats:
Total Pages read: 46,077
Longest Book: The Way Of Kings, Brandon Sanderson 1,258 pages
Five Stars: 14 books; Four Stars: 56 books; Three Stars: 36 books; Two Stars: 10 books; One Star: 4 books
Oldest Book: Little Women, Louisa May Alcott, published 1868
Newest Book: Witchful Thinking, HP Mallory, will be published Feb 2012 (I got a goodreads First Read advance copy, or maybe The Doctor picked it up for me :-P)

I wrote 15 full length reviews in 2011. I really wish I’d managed to write more than that, but at least thats more than one a month. Its easy to read quickly, but sometimes it takes too long to get my thoughts about a certain book in order. And by the time I manage to sit down and prepare to write, I’ve forgotten half the things I thought about while reading. Next year I hope to do better, I’ll shoot for a book review ever other week. 24 in a year.

The best find of 2011: hands down, was Louis McMaster Bujold. Her books are amazing and will be my favorites to reread for years and years to come.

Wouldn’t touch it again with a 10 ft pole: HP Mallory, sorry, her writing sucks, and her characters are crap. Also, “Clockwork Romances” … terrible terrible short stories. It is the ONLY book in 2011 that I started, but couldn’t finish.

Looking forward to in 2012: Next Bujold novel, told from Ivan’s POV, he’s a great character that deserves to be expanded upon! Also, hopefully, a new Jasper Fforde in his color-verse would be awesome, but I don’t think he’s posted any release dates.
